Zondal is the second antagonist of the Doctor Who story "The Ice Warriors".
He was portrayed by the late Roger Jones.
Zondal was the second-in-command of an Ice Warrior spaceship that crashlanded on Earth in prehistory. The ship was embedded in a glacier, leaving the crew dormant in a form of hibernation for thousands of years. After their captain, Varga was found and accidentally revived by the crew of Britannicus Ice Base, he stole equipment and took Victoria hostage, proceeding to free and revive Zondal and the rest of the crew.
Zondal was immediately committed to Varga's plan to return home at any cost. When Jamie and the scientist Arden came looking for Victoria, the Ice Warriors fired the ship's cannon at them, killing Arden and injuring Jamie. When Victoria escaped, Zondal wanted to fire the cannon at her but was stopped by Varga, who wanted her taken alive. Victoria was eventually returned to them by the scavenger Storr, who opposed the base's scientists and offered his local knowledge. Varga and Zondal quickly decided he was useless and killed him.
The Doctor was also taken prisoner when he came looking for Victoria and Zondal was left to look after the two prisoners alone while Varga took the rest of the crew to the base to obtain fuel rods. The Doctor and Victoria managed to disable him with a vial of ammonium sulphate, having realised he wasn't used to Earth's atmosphere. Zondal fired the cannon at the base before losing consciousness but failed to do any real damage.
By the time Zondal recovered, the Doctor and Victoria had escaped and disabled the cannon, while Varga and the others had been forced to retreat. Varga planned to blast off immediately, even though this would cause an avalanche that would destroy the base. Before he could do so, the humans fired their ioniser at the glacier at full power, destroying the ship and killing Zondal, Varga and everyone else on board.
