Zonuda is a major antagonist in the 1997 anime The King of Braves GaoGaiGar. It is the last resort of EI-01 in his plans to mechanize Earth and the universe.
Zonuda was voiced by Tomoe Hanba, who also voiced Sirica in Kirby: Right Back At Ya!.
Personality[]
Zonuda has almost no personality to speak of, or at least not any significant amount that was displayed. It only speaks its own name, and its only intent is destroying and assimilating matter and absorbing energy. It seems to be quite passive in battle, usually only attacking after being given an opening or in retaliation.
Biography[]
Two years prior to the events of the series, in the year 2003, the alien EI-01 landed on Earth, causing a house fire that killed the parents of one Mikoto Utsugi. Utsugi was unconscious during the event, and EI-01 implanted the seed of a 'New Machine Species' into her nervous system. The New Machine Species slowly matured inside Mikoto's body. One month after the defeat of the Z-Master, the new machine species, named Zonuda, fully matured, taking over and transforming Mikoto.
Zonuda immediately absorbed all energy in the GGG Orbit Base, where Mikoto's body was held. Not only did this leech power from the base, but it absorbed the energy from Guy Shishiou's cyborg body and from the machines of the Mobile Unit. While Guy managed to seal Zonuda in one half of the Orbit Base's division ship Amaterasu, Zonuda wrested control of the portion of the craft, disconnected it from the base, and landed in Tokyo.
Upon landing, Zonuda assimilated the wreck of Amaterasu, transforming it into a giant golden robot, the Zonuda Robo. It instantly began moving toward Tokyo Tower, the location of Mamoru Amami, mechanizing all of its surroundings as it did so. Galeon stood before Zonuda to impede its progress, but Mamoru broke the tower window and flew down to Galeon to try and fight Zonuda as well.
The lack of energy at Orbit Base and the absence of Mikoto, who put in the information to proceed with Final Fusion, the process to form GaoGaiGar, combined with the de-powered Mobile Unit, meant that resisting Zonuda would be nigh-impossible. However, Mobile Unit members HyoRyu, EnRyu, FuRyu, RaiRyu, and Volfogg volunteered to have their Super-AIs placed inside of the GaoMachines, so that Final Fusion would be achieved through their operation. The process was approved, and the other half of Amaterasu was sent to Tokyo.
The Zonuda Robo shot a beam at Amaterasu, causing it to explode, but the GaoMachines with installed Super-AIs survived. HyoRyu and EnRyu had been installed into LinerGao, FuRyu and RaiRyu into DrillGao, and Volfogg into StealthGao II. Guy ejected from StealthGao II and performed Fusion with Galeon, forming GaiGar, and then performed Final Fusion with the GaoMachines. Zonuda was quite idle during this process, even allowing the Electromagnetic Tornado generated during Final Fusion to push it out of the way.
After the process completed, Guy and the Mobile Unit engaged Zonuda, performing the Broken Phantom attack as a first strike. The attack failed to pierce Zonuda's barrier system, and the Phantom Ring enhancing the attack was mechanized and reduced to shards. When GaoGaiGar blocked another beam with the Protect Wall, the Phantom Ring enhancing that was destroyed in similar fashion. Zonuda Robo followed up by launching its fists at the Space Boosters on StealthGao II, mechanizing them the same and forcing them to be separated. Guy attempted to beat Zonuda with the Goldion Hammer, but it failed to incur any damage, even being pushed back by Zonuda, who partially mechanized the head, but not before Goldymarg separated the head from the shaft.
After a moment of hesitation, wherein the Mobile Unit pondered if Zonuda's destruction of human civilization was necessarily so evil as it seemed to them, though Guy continued to fight regardless, starting up the Hell and Heaven attack to try and defeat Zonuda. Zonuda Robo's barrier blocked even this, and it retaliated with a similar move. Mamoru flew up to intercept and mitigate it, but he was injured and blasted back. Within Zonuda, Mikoto's anguish at having harmed Mamoru left Zonuda's guard down, allowing Guy an opening.
Guy began to brutalize and dismember Zonuda Robo with GaoGaiGar's limbs, the parts of the GaoMachines containing the Super-AIs being broken off or mechanized as he continued. Zonuda Robo's head was flattened, it was punched straight through the palm all the way down the arm, one of its wings was pulled off, and ultimately, GaoGaiGar's bare hands pulled the core containing Zonuda and Mikoto from the Zonuda Robo's chest.
GaoGaiGar finished the fight with Zonuda Robo partially mechanized, its body pale. Guy stepped out of Galeon's mouth, Mamoru in his arms, and saw Zonuda standing in GaoGaiGar's palms. From within, Mikoto told Guy to kill her, and Zonuda slowly continued to mechanize GaoGaiGar, and even mechanized Guy's cyborg body as he approached. Although Mikoto continued to wish for death, Guy did not oblige her, simply using the G-Stone in his arm, the only thing that hadn't been mechanized, to attempt to purify Zonuda - only Mamoru having performed Purification with a G-Stone before.
Guy's usage of Purification freed Mikoto from Zonuda's influence, and the universe-destroying New Machine Species vanished from being. The Purification had given Mikoto and Guy new, evolved bodies, but the Zonuda rooted in Mikoto's body had certainly been disposed of.
