Zozo: Do you remember anything more about this place? About your bell?
Ollie: No. I... I remember Billy and Momma. She is sick. It's real bad. I gotta get back.
Zozo: Get back? No, no. No. You're exactly where you need to be. It's my turn for answers now.
Ollie: You brought me here on purpose? You... You said you was gonna take me back home. You lied to me.
Zozo: The moment I heard that bell ring inside of you, I suspected that you was connected to Nina. I wasn't positive, of course, but then you sang the song. And, if you know that song, if you have that bell, then you know something about my Nina. You have your little quest, but what about mine? What about my love conquering all?
Ollie: I'd help you if I could, but--
Zozo: You have been here, you idiot! You just don't remember, 'cause your BRAIN DON'T WORK!!!
Ollie: I never seen this place before. Not in my whole life.
Zozo: I tried to do this the nice way, Ollie.
Ollie: Rosy?
Zozo: I really did.
Ollie: Rosy?
Rosy: I'm sorry, bunny. I'd tell you to run... but it's too late.
~ Zozo confronting Ollie, revealing his true nature.
I thank the lord I met you.

Zozo is the main antagonist of the 2022 Netflix miniseries Lost Ollie, based on the book by William Joyce.

Despite initially coming across as a friendly, albeit serious old toy willing to help Ollie return to his owner Billy, he is eventually shown to be a ruthless and cruel maniac bent on killing anyone who stands in the way of him reuniting with his former love interest Nina. He is becoming Ollie's former best friend-turned-arch-nemesis in the process.

He was voiced by Tim Blake Nelson, who also played Dr. Pendanski in Holes, Jonathan Jacobo in Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, Officer LeFlore in Meet the Fockers, Buster Scruggs in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Leader in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harvey Allen in Fantastic Four and Martin Kirby in Angel Has Fallen.

Appearance[]

Zozo is a small plastic clown toy with reddish-orange hair, a giant red nose, and clown makeup. He also wears a light blue jacket with a white shirt and dark blue bow tie, brown shoes, and pants with a green and yellow design on both sides.

Personality[]

When Ollie first encounters him at the thrift store, Zozo appears willing to help him on his journey home, despite his somewhat stern demeanor. He also has a history with Rosy, a stuffed bear who he repaired and befriended.

However, as the series progresses, Zozo's true nature is revealed through his backstory where he fell in love with a Balinese doll named Nina before she was sold at an auction. In his quest to find her, he would become increasingly insane to the point of being willing to kill innocent toys to achieve his goals. This becomes all the more apparent once Ollie realizes Zozo's true intentions, especially since he had the same bell that Nina had inside of him, with Zozo believing he did something to her. Once Ollie explains that Nina's owner still loved her even if she didn't survive, this initially seems to work as Zozo breaks down crying. However, these were simply crocodile tears as he still tries to kill Ollie by ripping the bell out of his chest before a dying Rosy kills him.

Biography[]

A sentient stuffed rabbit named Ollie, who gets separated from his human owner, Billy, finds himself stuck in a thrift shop. He tries to escape, but gets attacked by a Miniature Dachshund named Buttons before being rescued by a clown toy named Zozo. When Zozo asks how Ollie got to the thrift shop, Ollie, who had fuzzy memories, says that he didn't know which direction his home was in. As he remembers his time with Billy and his "Momma", Ollie draws pictures of the directions to his home, and seeks help from Zozo, who reveals he had a lost friend of his, a dancing doll named Nina, and he spent years trying to search for her. Zozo and Ollie manage to escape, but are approached again by Buttons before he is driven away by a stuffed bear named Rosy, whom Zozo had met before. Ollie, Zozo, and Rosy arrive near the ship in the Ohio River and start a quest to look for Billy, who sets out looking for Ollie as well.

While on a quest to find Billy, Ollie, Zozo, and Rosy arrive at the city, where he enter a hospital. There, Ollie remembers an MRI scanner Billy's Momma goes into, after singing All I Have to Do is Dream to Billy when he gets scared. Ollie, Zozo, and Rosy go for a ride on the train, jump off from it, and then go into the forest. There, they climb up the wooden Troll statue and look at the view of an amusement park called Dreamland, which Zozo points towards despite Ollie's suggestion to go to school he remembered going to with Billy. There, Ollie remembers the discussion about Billy's Momma's condition. Worried that she will die soon, Ollie decides to return home, but when Zozo claims Dreamland is exactly where he need him to go to, Ollie realize that Zozo lied to him about bringing him back home. Zozo reveals his suspicions about Ollie's connection to Nina after hearing the bell ring inside of him and the song Ollie sang, which reminds him of his past. Zozo takes Ollie hostage, as Rosy says she's been trying to leave Ollie behind to protect him. Back in the forest, Billy notices the Troll statue and the view of Dreamland, remembering Momma telling him about a place that has "no fear nor pain. Just love".

In 1965, Zozo, who is revealed to be a spring doll in his own ball-shooting stall game in Dreamland, meets Nina, a Balinese doll, in her own stall, Bali Hai, and the two form a close romantic bond. However, during the auction in 1970, Nina gets sold to a young girl who brings her home, leaving Zozo devastated. Years passed as Zozo's stall collapses, setting him free. After sewing legs of his own, he is able to stand up and sets out to find Nina. During his quest, Zozo discovers Rosy, a torn-apart stuffed bear, whom he repairs and befriends. Together, they began searching for Nina, but Zozo's quest to find Nina has driven him mad, to the point of him murdering a stuffed rhinoceros for misleading him, much to Rosy's horror. Ashamed of what he had done, Zozo leaves a note for Rosy and goes to the thrift shop, where he stayed for years. Rosy walks up to the shop's door the shop in search of Zozo, but as she reads his note telling her not to follow him and thanking her for everything, she relents and walks away sadly. Zozo, who still remains in the thrift shop, hears the bell reminding him of Nina, reminiscent of how he and Ollie first met. Back in the present day, Zozo has Ollie tied up and tortures him for answers about Nina, though Ollie still doesn't remember anything about her. Before Zozo can tear him apart, Rosy gives him some time in an attempt of freeing Ollie. Rosy unsuccessfully attempts to distract Zozo when he notices Ollie escaping on the swan boat. Zozo, enraged, savagely throws Rosy against the Bali Hai sign and start chasing Ollie. The Swan boat falls off the path, with Zozo managing to get on the boat and trying to slaughter Ollie before Rosy intervenes. As the two fight, Zozo stabs Rosy in the chest, wishing he never bring her back to life in the first place, and throws her off the Swan boat, with Ollie being thrown off the boat into the water.

After making it back to his home, Ollie discovers a photo of a young girl holding Nina, revealing that the girl who got her from Dreamland was actually Billy's Momma, as he remembers her telling her son that she made Ollie out of small pieces of clothing, and placed the bell that belonged to Nina in his chest as a heart after Nina fell apart a long time ago. Zozo, who had been following Ollie all the way home and lost his right eye, furiously chases Ollie out of Billy's old house and beats him, believing that he has done something to Nina. Ollie confess to him that Nina fell apart, but was loved so much by Billy's Momma. As Zozo cries in heartbreak after learning the truth, Ollie tells him that it's okay to feel hurt when he lost someone he loves. Although the two reconcile, Zozo spitefully tries to kill Ollie anyway by ripping the bell out of his chest before being stabbed to death by a dying Rosy, who assures to Ollie that he already made it back home. In the end, Zozo and Rosy end up being dragged into the water.

Trivia[]

  • It's not entirely clear whether Zozo's emotional breakdown was out of genuine remorse or if this was merely a manipulation tactic. As a result, him trying to kill Ollie anyway could be the result of him believing he was too far gone to redeem himself.
  • Zozo is like a dark version of Ollie, about what would happen if Ollie hadn't found Billy right now.
  • In the book, he realizes what a monster he is and sacrifices himself to save Ollie. Nothing of the sort happens in the show.
