~ Zurab Radiani's last words to Tyler Rake. |
Zurab Radiani is the main antagonist of the 2023 Netflix action film Extraction 2, the second installment of the Extraction film series.
He is the founder and leader of the Georgian organized crime syndicate known as the Nagazi as well as the older brother of Davit Radiani. After Davit's death at Tyler Rake's hands, however, Zurab obsesses with killing the intrepid mercenary at all costs to avenge his brother.
He was portrayed by Tornike Gogrichiani.
Biography[]
As shown, during his youth, Zurab and his family fled to Armenia due to a civil war, presumably the Georgian Civil War (1991-1993). In Yerevan, Zurab and Davit were attacked by a group of bullies, during which Zurab ran away. Upon returning to their father, the father berated Zurab for failing to save his brother from a severe beating, telling him to fight for him for every last ounce of blood.
The duo would eventually be taken under the wing of their uncle, Avtandil, where they began running drugs and eventually became murderers-for-hire. Over time, Zurab would build an empire called the Nagazi (Georgian for Shepherd), a crime group with a focus on the concept of family and religion. His brother would also marry a woman named Ketevan and have two children with her. However, Davit would be captured and arrested for assaulting and killing a DEA officer. Despite his control over the politicians of the country, Zurab was unable to free his brother owing to pressure from American officials, and Davit moved his family inside the prison with him. Davit proves to be an abusive husband and father but his son Sandro admires him, despite all the abuses due to him being heavily indoctrinated by his father. Having had enough with Davit's abuse and criminal lifestyle, Ketevan calls out to her sister for help, and Mia sends a man to task Tyler to rescue her and her children.
At the beginning of the film, Zurab met with a politician who signed off on increasing Davit's sentence, asking him not to. When the politician claimed he was unable to due to the pressure from the American authority, Zurab stabbed him in the neck with a pitchfork and murdered his men. Later in the film, when Rake attempts to extract Ketevan and her children from the prison, killing Davit in the process, he sends his men after them, only for them to escape.
He then mourns his brother's corpse, reflecting over his death, and his promise to fight for him with every last ounce of blood. Zurab assembles his men and gets access to the location of Rake and Davit's family after being contacted by Davit's son and his nephew, Sandro, who admires his late father. He attacks the safe-house and confronts Rake and attempts to kill him, only to kill Yaz. Despite this, as well as the death of 10 of his men, he manages to persuade Sandro to come with him. Instead of leaving the country, like his uncle encourages him to, he and Sandro stay in a church nearby Rake's location. Avtandil believes that Zurab has let his hate consume him and persuade him to let go of his revenge, pointing out the staggering loss of his men and telling him to be a good example for his nephew. Enraged, he shoots his uncle, shocking Sandro.
When Rake arrives, Zurab puts an explosive vest on Sandro, and threatens to blow him up. Zurab then asks Sandro to take Rake's gun and shoot him to avenge his father but Sandro refuses, having realized how monstrous his uncle and his father really are. Nik then arrives, resulting in a standoff. Though he manages to shoot Nik, he ends up in a brutal fight with Rake, ultimately culminating with Tyler stabbing him with a nail multiple times. In spite of being wounded, Zurab refuses to surrender and professes he will never stop, causing Rake, who realizes that Davit's wife and children are never going to be safe as long as Zurab lives, to calmly shoot him in the head, ending his reign of terror as well as avenging Yaz's death.
Trivia[]
- Despite valuing the idea of family, Zurab is willing to murder his own family members for the sake of avenging the death of his brother Davit. This makes him highly hypocritical, but at the same time, it is possible that for him, his brother is more important than the life of his other family members like his sister-in-law, nephew, niece and ultimately his own uncle.
- That said, by being raised in a terrible environment and caring for his brother enough to avenge him, Zurab is a lot more sympathetic than his predecessor Amir Asif, a sadistic and psychopathic crime lord who cared for no one but himself.
