~ Zypher taunting Sunny over his relationship with Veil. |
Zypher is a supporting character in the AMC series Into the Badlands.
She is Baron Jacobee's Regent, the Baron of Mining and ruler of the Pickaxe Territory. One of the most skilled warriors in the Badlands, Zypher secretly wishes to kill her Baron so that she can take his position as Baron, and is willing to work with his enemies in order to achieve this goal.
She was portrayed by Ellen Hollman.
Personality[]
Zypher showed herself to be perfectly acclimated to the society of the Badlands, cunning and ruthless with a desire for more power. She had a desire to get back into a relationship with Sunny, her ex-boyfriend, as he was a ruthless warrior just like her. Upon finding out that he was with someone he genuinely loved, Zypher mocked him for trying to have a normal life, displaying a disdain for those who did not follow the brutal ways of the Badlands. Zypher also planned to overthrow Baron Jacobee and take his position, showing she did not have loyalties, and was willing to work against those close to her in order to rise in the ranks of society. During her battle against M.K., she did not fear death, despite M.K.'s supernatural power massively overpowering her.
Biography[]
Parlay with Quinn[]
Long before the events of the series, Zypher was in a relationship with Sunny, but he eventually ended things with her as Baron Quinn forbade his Clippers from entering into serious relationships. Sunny is eventually sent by Quinn to meet with Zypher, as Quinn wishes to meet with Baron Jacobee in order to form an alliance. Sunny asks Zypher to set up a parlay with Jacobee, which she says she will do if Sunny begins sleeping with her again. He refuses, and Zypher quickly deduces that Sunny has entered a new relationship that he is actually series about. Zypher tells Sunny that he can never escape being a killer, but she agrees to tell Jacobee of Quinn's parlay request. The parlay takes place in a cemetery, with Quinn and Jacobee bringing Sunny and Zypher alongside a large group of their Clippers. Quinn and Jacobee discuss a potential alliance against rival Baron the Widow, but they are suddenly attacked by the Widow's Regent Tilda, who uses one of Jacobee's signature pickaxe weapons to attack Quinn, tricking Quinn into thinking Jacobee attacked him, causing a fight to break out between the two groups. Zypher faces Sunny, and the two fight until Sunny flees in an attempt to find M.K., his Colt. Sunny ends up running into Tilda, and figures out what has happened. He takes one of her signature butterfly throwing stars and gives it to Zypher, ending the conflict. However, Jacobee refuses to ally with Quinn as he believes that it is Quinn's fault that the Widow attacked them, considering Quinn instigated the conflict with her in the first place.
Plotting to become Baron[]
Zypher is later approached by Ryder, the son of Quinn, who informs her of his plan to kill his father and take his position, which gains her attention. She then takes him to a secret meeting with the Widow, where Zypher reveals her plan to kill Jacobee and take his position as Baron, similar to Ryder. The Widow informs the two of them that there will be an ambush by Jacobee in the marketplace the following night against Quinn, and it will serve as the perfect opportunity for Zypher and Ryder to kill their Barons and take their territories for themselves. Zypher and Jacobee arrive at the marketplace where they meet with Ryder, with the plan to kill Quinn and then turn on Jacobee. However, Sunny's Colt M.K., who possesses the supernatural ability known as the Gift, has been brought by Quinn, who anticipated this ambush. Quinn cuts M.K., activates his Gift, at which point M.K. immediately overpowers and kills Jacobeee. Zypher attempts to fight M.K., but she is unable to match his Gift, and is completely overpowered before being launched into a brick wall, incapacitating her. It is unknown if Zypher survived this, but she is not mentioned or seen again for the rest of the series. After the ambush, Quinn is presumed dead and M.K. disappears, with Ryder taking credit for the deaths of Quinn and Jacobee so he can claim their territories, but makes no mention of Zypher to the other Barons, suggesting she either died or fled and went into hiding following the ambush.
Powers & Abilities[]
- Martial Arts/Swordsmanship: Zypher was shown to be one of the most capable fighters in all of the Badlands, being able to match Sunny in combat, the most feared and dangerous Clipper in the Badlands.
- Leadership: As a Regent, Zypher would have successfully led an army of Clippers alongside Jacobee. She also desired to become a Baron, suggesting she was capable of ruling an entire territory.
Trivia[]
- Had Zypher killed Jacobee, it is unlikely her position as Baron would have been recognized by the other Barons, as she planned to assassinate him rather than defeat him in single combat. This is shown in the fact that the Widow assassinated her husband rather than facing him directly, causing the other Barons to not recognize her. Ryder was only able to avoid this as there were no other survivors from the ambush able to contradict his story.
